2002 Festival

Along Highway 87, just south of Big Spring, motorists are greeted by this impressive view of fifteen  lighted poinsettias. Situated on the dam that creates Cosden Lake, these are part of a display of a million lights in an annual festival. There were seven poinsettias  in 2001, 11 in 2002, and now 15, however only twelve are showing in this picture.
Prisoners of the Wilderness Camp welded together reinforcing bars to create the poinsettias.  Bobby McDonald produced the design
You are invited to view the 2001 and 2002 Versions of this Festival, since this page is primarily an update of changes made in 2003.

No one beats our lighted poinsettias -- not by a dam site!

This page is under construction.
Material below is from the 2002 Festival.  More coming.

A view of the dam and the Veterans' Hospital from the south end

Just north of the dam , this sign stands along Whipkey Drive to welcome motorists into Comanche Trail Park to view the Festival of  Lights.  This is the sixth year that Pat Simmons and her committee have given us this wonderful treat.
Lighted trees and this star are seen to the left of the entrance.
Big Spring has caught the patriotic fervor now typical of our nation
Here is a closer view of the same flag
This scene comes into view not far past the entrance.

Much of the view is best viewed walking the footpaths.

Along the road past the entry are to be found these greeting boards from the Big Spring High School
and the Big Spring Junior High.  And the famous Steer mascot emblem in lights along with the boards.
This Christmas tree is along the back shore of the lake from the dam (West side), along a footpath.

Greetings from sponsoring organizations line the right of the entrance road.
Scenic Mountain Medical Center, Wells Fargo, and KBST/KBEST give you joy of the season.

This lighted footbridge, one of two in the project, is seen looking SSW toward the area of
THE BIG SPRING OF WEST TEXAS
Same covered bridge as the picture above, three closer perspectives.  Another view may be found on another page in this web.

Bob Brock Ford, Alon USA, and Home Hospice also helped provide us this enjoyment.

Found near the tennis courts (where else?) at the Dora Roberts Community Center, these two enthusiasts wave a welcoming greeting.

MdDonald Realty and H NB Mortgage, Heritage Museum, and the Festival of Lights Committee
all give you welcome.
